Bob Vila in the House?

Anyone here know anything about fixing a hole in drywall? A friend of mine accidentally knocked a hole in a bedroom wall and would like to fix it before the owner of the place finds out about it. The hole is probably about four or five inches across and three or four inches tall and irregularly shaped. It’s also right in the middle of the line of sight when you walk into the room, but very close to a window (and thank god it wasn’t three or four inches to the left!), so the resultant patch cannot be hidden with a picture or anything.

Well, I know how to do it but I really don't know if I can explain it. Here goes. If you go to Home Depot or Lowes or something, they will have this stuff that looks like window screen that is used to patch drywall. You buy that, drywall mud (also called drywall compound I think), and a putty knife or drywall knife. And fine sandpaper. I don't know about there, but the people who work at HD here actually know what they are doing and can be *very* helpful.

You cut a patch a bit bigger than the hole, spread a little mud on the edges of the hole, put the patch over it, and mud over the patch all the way to the edges. Let dry completely and sand. Repeat with a layer of drywall mud, let dry, sand smooth again. (it took me four layers the last time I did this). Thin layers are better, otherwise you just have to sand more off to make it smooth.

Hope this helps...the things you learn when you buy a "fixer upper" house!

rebecca--just call me roberta vila :)
