I think this goes way beyond it. The phrase itself is as American as "schmuck." That is, it's a foreign phrase which has more or less been integrated into American vernacular in a pretty standard manner, at least in terms of how it is pronounced. I believe this is a situation of a higher level of stupidity. Though it most likely is one of those filthy "yinzers." God I hate that word. I'm putting way too much thought/effort into this post.
